Why do HDR screenshots look washed out

Anyone else notice screenshots look gray and flat when taken on an HDR display? What helped me was opening the image in Photos and just hitting Edit then Save - no changes - so it tone-maps to SDR and stops looking dull in other apps.

They look washed out because you’re capturing HDR values but most viewers/web apps assume SDR and skip tone-mapping, so the image gets flattened and gray. Easiest fix is to use an HDR‑aware app and export to SDR/sRGB (your Photos Edit > Save trick does exactly that), or just toggle HDR off before taking the screenshot if you need a quick SDR grab.

Ugh, this drives me nuts too — HDR grabs look flat in apps that assume SDR. If you’re on Windows, turning off “Capture HDR” in Snipping Tool or flipping the display to SDR before grabbing avoids the gray look so you don’t have to do the Photos Edit->Save trick every time. Do your shots look normal in Photos but washed out in Discord/Chrome?
