Why are addresses in ALL CAPS

I just noticed our template still requires CITY and STATE in caps — why do we do it that way? During the 2 pm training today, a new clerk asked and I said it might be a holdover from old OCR, but I’d love the real origin story if anyone knows.

Pretty sure it’s USPS Pub 28–era — “old OCR” — not us yelling at the post office, just legacy uniformity; modern CASS/DPV doesn’t require caps and mixed case is fine. If we aren’t feeding images to sorters, I’d pilot a day of title case, run it through CASS/NCOA, and compare exceptions/returns. Any downstream EDI export or print vendor still expecting caps?
